Overview
J Mascis and The Fog is the post-Dinosaur Jr musical project embarked by Dinosaur Jr's legendary founding member, musician J Mascis.
Tonight J Mascis & The Fog will be supported by Dead Confederate, Arthur Walker & Head of Programmes.
J Mascis (Dinosaur Junior) & The Fog
J Mascis and The Fog is a project of Dinosaur Jr. front man J Mascis. Mascis played all the instruments and sang on the first Fog album, “More Light”, which was recorded in Mascis’ home studio and released on Artemis Records in 2000. When it was time to tour, he enlisted the help of legendary bassist Mike Watt (FIREHOSE, The Minutemen) and drummer George Berz (Dinosaur Jr.). The trio toured the US, Europe, Japan and Australia, playing a mixture of songs from “More Light," Dinosaur Jr. back catalog, and Black Flag and Stooges covers.
In Europe, they were frequently joined onstage by Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton. Now, with two new Dinosaur Jr. studio albums under his belt, Mascis is ready to get fogged in again. The current lineup consists of bassist Dave Schools (Widespread Panic, Stockholm Syndrome) and Kyle Spence (Harvey Milk, Fiddlehead, The Tom Collins), both of Athens, GA.

Head of Programmes
Head of Programmes is essentially the alias of one James MacGregor, a loner type singer/songwriter whose subtle, simple songs talk of melancholic self-obsessed views on relationships, God and heartbreak. HOP's early output consisted of home recorded four-track experiments "My Horse, your car" and "Breaking Your Arm", given to friends and done for his own enjoyment, not many still exist. MacGregor's non four-track debut 2007's "Heart Rung Of Hope"Ep, again self released, this time in a limited run of 100 hand numbered discs, tackled the same subject matter but in a more advanced and structured manner. The music itself was still spare, but the recordings show the beginnings of Head of Programmes inviting other players into the sound, this time in the shape of D.Parker on Guitar. From this point on live shows became more frequent, and the sound began to resemble more signs of traditional songcraft. Frequent collaborators have included Amie Willingale of The Dharma Bums, ex Lemanis drummer John Sidbotham and Brown Scotch, another bedroom based singer songwriter and singer of alt-experimentalists Fishermans Mission. November 2008 sees the release of "The Magnetic South" via fledgeling indie label FoundObjective. It sees Head of Programmes fleshing out the instrumentation while still keeping the signature bare bones appeal of early live shows. MacGregor is currently working on material for a second full release, due out sometime in 2009.

Dead Confederate
Just like Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket, the members of Dead Confederate grew up with the 1990's alternative rock from the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth, before they discovered southern rock and Neil Young. Unlike the former two bands, Dead Confederate still honours their old love for grunge, and therefore there is an equal amount of 'twang' and 'teen spirit' in their powerful rock. And let's be honest, after grunge bled to death 10 years ago with bands like Nickelback, it's nice to hear the true spirit of this music performed in just the right way. And the added emotional depth of southern rock makes it even more moving. No, not just for nostalgics!
